It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to come along and have a look at my latest body of works, as part of the 2018 Shimmer Photographic Biennale, held by the City of Onkaparinga, in South Australia at a wide range of exotic & beautiful venues throughout the glorious McLaren Vale wine region.

These ten images have been located, captured, selected and edited by Alex Mausolf on his travels throughout the Fleurieu Peninsula during 2018.

The ten photographs on exhibit here are all limited release fine art long-exposure images, with twenty copies of each image available for sale in larger format print sizes. They are a safe visual exploration of Alex’s challenges, living with PTSD, schizophrenia, anxieties and chronic auditory hallucinations, leading to him experiencing a world that straddles reality and illusion.

Alex is seeking your assistance through the sales of this exhibition that he may be able to upgrade his camera body to something that will allow him to create prints twice the size of the ones exhibited in this event and larger again. The camera body he currently has is quite aged and nearing the end of its usable lifespan; printing at this size is its absolute limit in regards of size, definition and detail.

Conceptual Intent of the exhibition:

I live with schizophrenia and intense auditory hallucinations, accompanied with severe anxieties every day. My photography attempts to allow others insight into my world of living in the no-mans-land, straddled between reality and illusion. The images explore the effects of living in a waking dream through the contrasts of the crisp landscapes and the blurred illusory appearance of the clouds and water, representative of my life-challenges with mental health.

The isolated subjects suggest my disconnect from the world and the lack of colour is deliberately used to infer the isolation from the public at large that I experience in my life. The crisp detail parallels my precise nature and creativity, which I express through my photography, via the demanding methods required for long-exposure photography. This allows me some much appreciated moments of mindfulness, providing respite from my intrusive internal sensations.

Definition of Chimera:

an illusion or fabrication of the mind; especially : an unrealisable dream

– a fancy, a chimera in my brain, troubles me in my prayer – John Donne

– His utopia was a chimera.
